When would I need to use emergency contraception?

  • If you have had sex without using a condom or the condom split or you are a female and have forgotten to take your pill you are still at risk of pregnancy and STIs.
  • The best thing to do is to act fast. The sooner you act the less likely you are to get pregnant. Remember also that sex without a condom also means you may have picked up an STI (Sexuall transmitted infection)

What is emergency contraception?

There are 2 forms of Emergency contraception:

  • A single pill that you take that can prevent you from getting pregnant. Some people refer to it as the ‘morning after pill’.
  • An IUD coil

How long after having had unprotected sex can I take emergency contraception?

  • The Emergency Contraceptive Pill can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after having unsafe sex.
  • The earlier you take it, the more effective it is at preventing pregnancy.
  • A coil can be fitted to prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Contact one of the services listed and make sure they know it’s urgent so that they see you within the time needed.

Where can I get emergency contraception?

Free and confidential emergency contraception can be obtained from:

  • Contraceptive and sexual health services in your area

  • Accident and emergency (A&E) departments www.somerset.nhs.uk The list of A&E Hospitals is at the bottom of the page which will open in a new window

Minor Injury Units (MIUs) and A&E departments are able to offer emergency contraception during bank holidays. Alternatively, contact NHS Direct 0845 4647 for other out of hours services.

How can I make sure I get an emergency appointment?

  • There is an Emergency Contraception card that can be shown to a receptionist at a GP Surgery or Pharmacy. This helps you to emphasis that you need an appointment as soon as possible
  • Ask at your local youth centre, Connexions Centre, C-Card Issuer or clinic for a card.

How often can I take emergency contraception?

  • Remember, emergency contraception is not a form of regular contraception. It really is just for emergencies.
